Duhallow is an area in North Cork around the towns of Kanturk, Millstreet, Newmarket and a host of surrounding villages. It is steeped in history and culture, and produces the finest food right here from the land. Business in Duhallow tends to be smaller, often family run businesses where you will get a very personal service. Sectors include engineering, agri-business, retail, hospitality, services and many more.
The idea of #DuhallowBiz is to create a place on the social web for businesses in Duhallow to post their offers, promotions, services, change in opening hours, images and so on. It’s a way for businesses in Duhallow to categorise its conversation on Social Media.
Hashtags are a great way to pull together a topic like this and are effective on many of the social platforms we use to market our businesses. So they can be easily used on Facebook Business Pages and users can either click on the hashtag to see more content about that hashtag or they can put the hashtag into the search bar to find out what’s being said around this subject.
Likewise, hashtags are just fantastic on Twitter and again the consumer (or an interested business owner) can put #DuhallowBiz into the search bar and find the current content around that hashtag. I do recommend however on Twitter to do the following. On desktop or laptop, click ‘live’ in the Twitter results to get the most recent information. On mobile choose ‘all tweets’.
Moving to Instagram, it’s hashtag central! I read somewhere that 11 is the optimum number of hashtags on Instagram. Again the user can find images by searching or by clicking on any hashtag to discover more similar content.
Hashtags are used on so many other platforms including Google+, Flickr, Pinterest and more. So then, you will say, but how can anyone monitor a hashtag like #DuhallowBiz across all of these social networks? Tagboard is a great tool that will do just that. So go to TagBoard.com and perform a search for #DuhallowBiz. You’ll see immediately that it returns results from across the social web. What I love about this, apart from the fact that it’s a free tool, is that people who are not on a given network can see the content that’s shared publicly. What did I just say there? Yes. For example, if you are not on Instagram, you will still see the results from Instagram. And yes, before you ask, it’s all perfectly above board! So now you can start to see the possibilities.

In any case, when a consumer now searches for #DuhallowBiz on Twitter (say) they will find a stream of content relating to business in Duhallow. Those businesses who regularly post under the hashtag will get those eyeballs on their content, giving them the edge over those who don’t.
#DuhallowBiz is a pet project of mine, but it’s designed to be for all of you. That includes businesses who want to use it and consumers who want to track it. For the business owners out there who are marketing on Social Media I say, it’s free, it’s relevant and it will give you the edge, so why not use it! To consumers in Duhallow, I say, keep a watch on this, you may just find a dream deal here some day!
